The Brass Society Executive Committee - 2007 / 2008

Paul

President - Paul Lynch

Paul is a fourth year Engineer, and has been playing the trombone for half his life, and plays in both the Brass Band and Symphonic Brass, as well as being the inaugural conductor of the beginner band. He now spends his time running the society and trying to make everything modern. Outside of Brass Soc, Paul can sometimes be found blasting out show tunes for thespians.
Louise

Treasurer - Louise Phillips

Louise was a first year mathematician but is now a second year physicist, which has made her generally a much happier person. She has played the cornet for the past few years and plays second cornet in the band. Since coming to university she has aquired a new love of brass, but at heart she is still a string player and can also be found playing the violin in symphony orchestra.
Rob

Secretary - Rob Henney

Rob is a Second Year Mathematician, and plays Second Baritone in the Brass Band. Despite being a Brass player for a number of years, he is relatively new to the world of Brass Banding. While at Warwick, he experienced his first contest and first Whit Friday, and really enjoyed both of them. Rob also enjoys the social side of the Band, mainly because of all the curry socials.
Ant

Concert Manager (Summer Term) - Antony Edwards

This is Antony's second spell on the executive committee; he just couldn't stay away after being our Social Sec two years ago! Having played a variety of brass instruments since he began in his local brass band at the age of 11, he has since settled on the cornet. Now in his fourth year, Antony pretends to study for a Master's degree in Mathematics when not banding or at the bar.
Matthew

Marketing Manager - Matthew Brunt

Matthew is a 2nd year Engineer and has been playing Brass instruments since he was about 8 and playing in a Brass Band since he was 9. He has played all over the country and in many different countries around Europe. He spends most of his time either drinking or finding ways not to work (Which usually include drinking). He is from the proper Brass Band country of Yorkshire and is proud of it!
Verity

Librarian and Equipment Officer - Verity Bonnell

Verity is a third year biology student with a real dedication to brass band. She loves her Cornet and enjoys practising for at least five hours every day - much to the delight of her housemates! Originating from Wales, Verity even has a musical accent! However, the main aspect of brass band that Verity enjoys is the socialising - who can resist a social with such super band geeks!
Ed

Chamber Brass Coordinator - Ed Kent

Ed is a 4th year Computer Scientist, and plays the trombone in both the Brass Band and Symphonic Brass Ensemble. He has been playing in ensembles since the age of 11, and now spends most his time at Warwick either pretending to work towards his degree, or playing in orchestras and bands. Like Matt, he's also from the Brass Band capital of the world - Yorkshire.
Ben

Social Secretary - Ben Norman

Ben was a 1st year computer science student but is now going to become a 1st year international business student, owing to him having no real idea what he wants to do with his life, post university. For the mean time he enjoys banding and rowing as well as conducting symphonic brass. He currently plays cornet on front row, which he has been playing for about 12 years, but he feels it may be a time for a change, he is thinking about contra basoon. Ben vehemently disputes that Yorkshire is a “proper brass banding county” and is a proud Midlander. Leicester > Harrogate.

Conductors

Simon

Brass Band & Symphonic Brass Ensemble (September 2001 - Present) - Simon Hogg

A graduate of the National Youth Orchestra, the Royal Academy of Music and Birmingham University; Simon Hogg became a founder member of The Fine Arts Brass in 1980. During this time he performed two thousand concerts, visited over sixty countries, recorded 150 BBC radio and TV broadcasts and made 25 commercial recordings. The Ensemble commissioned seventy works by leading British composers including Malcolm Arnold, Michael Nyman, Colin Matthews, Michael Berkley, Michael Finnissy, Tim Souster and Michael Torke and performed in most major European music festivals.

In 1994 Simon founded Warwick Music, a specialist publisher of woodwind and brass music. Starting with one piece (Holst's ‘Concertante for Trombone & Organ’ (1894), which he discovered in the British Museum) the catalogue now has over 1,200 titles. Many of these titles appear on the Associated Board examination syllabus.

Simon Hogg joined Warwick School as Head of Brass in September 2003. In that time he has formed numerous new bands and won Gold & Silver Medals at the National Concert Band Festival.

In 1996 Simon was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. He is a Professor of Trombone at the Royal College of Music Junior Department and for three years was Senior External Examiner at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama.

Symphonic Brass Ensemble - Ben Norman

As above Ben is a first year Int. Bus. Student, as well as playing cornet however, he now also conducts the Symphonic Brass Ensemble. He has held the post of student conductor for nearly two terms now, and coincidently that is precisely the length of his conducting experience to date.

Webmaster

Stephen

Webmaster - Stephen Tawn

Stephen is a fourth year maths PhD student. Although really a trombone player he can be found trying to play the tennor horn in the Brass Band.
